Nicholas Negroponte

Early in 2007, we were asked to design the UCLA Regents poster for Nicholas Negroponte at Rebeca Méndez Design.

For this poster, we drew inspiration from Negropotne’s name and were intreged by the simplicity and power of a single black dot. The typography was kept very minimal and a line drawing of an early rendering of the $100 dollar laptop was used.

The poster later received a Merit Award from the AIGA

Black Helmets

A collection of five helmets
made with the technique of
modular origami. The helmets
are each made of 3O–4O
square sheets of paper,
folded into units that connect
together creating an abstracted
geometric form.

The helmets were used in
2OO8 for a performance
by Collabo.

This project was later published by Gestalten, in Papercraft, a collection of design and art made with paper.

As a part of of a PhD seminar lead by Sylvia Lavin, I was asked by UCLA Architecture and Urban Design PhD students Per-Johan Dahl and Sergio Miguel Figueiredo to design a time line for architectural journal LOG.

The timeline tracks the activities of IAUS, the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, and its key members.

I had two days to finish the design and have it sent to print.

In the summer of 2009, I was ask to design the lecture poster and booklets for the UCLA Design Media Arts department.

The result was a package of 2 booklets held together by a folded poster.

LaRaBa

Established in the early 1990s, LARABA is a non profit organization in the thriving Downtown Los Angeles Artist District. Their main purpose is to bring about civic betterment and social improvement by promoting common good and welfare within the local community and the world beyond it. The group is constantly raising questions about the development of the arts district, insuring that its artist and creative residents have a voice in shaping the present situation and future growth of the neighborhood.

Having been without a logo for more than several years, the association called for a logo competition early in 2009. The included logo types and accompanied design implementations are part of the material entered into the competition. Three different logos were conceived and a full stationery set was created for each logotype.

system based on the golden
ratio. In this case, the golden
rectangle was used to create

The Mirror Box

The Mirrorbox is an ongoing research project exploring temporary states of shared identity.

The Mirrorbox grew out of a simple question, “What is it like to be you?”

Preliminary at home experiments with the apparatus revealed that for longer durations, the Mirrorbox could have lasting effects.

With this in mind a survey was produced with questions derived from the Myers Briggs personality test, the empathy quotient, and an original LSD questionnaire from the 60s.

The results reveal myriad potential applications for this contraption.
